Beliefs
Aborigines believed in Spiritual beings. These beings were usually associated with either the species of life or aspects of the environment. Other Aborigine groups also believed in supernatural beings that were not related to nature but are thought to still be Father/Mother to all. Examples of some spiritual beings include the Great Spirit Father who created all the natural features of the land, the Great Earth Mother who was the source of fertility and life and the Rainbow Snake, who is a related being of the Dreaming, the source of all wildlife, water and food as well as laws and rituals.
Once British settlers arrived in Australia, Christianity took over their religion. They were forced to believe in only one God- the main God, the creator of heaven and earth, of all things. He is the one that creates all the laws and rituals. He is represented in the trinity that consists of three aspects; God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Compared to the religion of Aborigines, Christianity is male dominated as God is thought to have characteristics and actions of a man while there are female dominated gods in the Aboriginal's religion.
